Excerpt from the story, “Fools,” in Yarnslingers’ anthology, This Happened:

I clasped my hands, began praying, and asked for His guidance in becoming a better human being and sharing my better life with a girlfriend. He would consider me a worthy supplicant, not just another self-serving schlub. If I was truly good, or at least, truly seemed to be good, then my prayers stood a better chance of being answered. It was more righteous than rudely praying for pussy, right? I also burned my cherished Playboy magazines in our backyard
incinerator—a sacrificial offering I hoped would seal the deal. Besides, I’d kill myself if Grandma ever saw them.
