Sachiko Takano Fellenberg
Although a year has passed since the publication of Sayonara Cowboy: A Memoir, I still find myself tumbling backward in time. I’m unsure if it’s a function, or dysfunction, of my age. Google “history of nostalgia” and you’ll find that it was once diagnosed as a debilitating malady. In the 16th and 17th centuries doctors prescribed remedies like leeches, opium, and even “pain and terror” as cures for nostalgia. Regardless, I think there’s often something informative and empowering you may discover from another walk into the past.
That said, I hope you’ll join me this Saturday at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance for a program that invites you to a seldom visited corner of our nation’s history as chronicled in the short, but compelling documentary, Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight: The Japanese War Brides. In conjunction with the film, I’ll share with you my experience about a particular Japanese war bride, my mother, Sachiko Takano Fellenberg.
